Warren Todd Furniss was born in Pelham, New York, on June 5, 1921. He attended Phillips Academy, Andover, and received his B.A. from Yale in 1942. After graduation Furniss entered the U.S. Army Air Force, serving chiefly in the Medical Administrative Corps in Guam until 1946. Following the war, Furniss returned to Yale and received a M.A. (1948) and a Ph.D. (1952).
